Weekends at the Whirligigs
When I was growing up, there was a farm way out in the country that had been nicknamed “Acid Park”. It was full of handmade metal windmills, aka “whirligigs”, that were varying heights and had reflectors all over them. They were situated perfectly in a sharp curve, so when you drove by at night, your headlights would hit them and cause a pretty trippy light show, hence the nickname “Acid Park” (it was especially cool on windy nights!). The landowner, Vollis Simpson, made the whirligigs as a hobby post retirement, and he was recognized nationally on several occasions for his metal masterpieces, some of which are even on display in museums! He eventually got to the point where he was not physically able to maintain the whirligigs and the land started to overgrow them. Luckily our town stepped in and decided to pay homage to the whirligigs by developing the Whirligig Park as part of a downtown revitalization effort. The whirligigs were carefully moved from their original home on the farm to downtown, and now stand proudly for all to see. If you’re from Eastern North Carolina, it’s worth taking a little drive over to Wilson to check the park out! You can read more details and history on the whirligigs here, and you can see more photos and videos of the whirligigs on Instagram – there is a whole page devoted to them – @whirligigpark.
I was so excited to finally have the opportunity to take some photos at the Whirligig Park a few weeks ago! This casual look is perfect for the weekend (or even the office if you work in a more casual environment where jeans are allowed!). This white top is a nice quality knit material and it has the cutest little blue & white striped ruffle detail on the sleeves. It would actually pair really well with navy dress pants or skirts, too. This top is on sale for under $27 and it also comes in navy (it runs a little big – I would recommend sizing down). The rest of the outfit details are linked at the bottom of this post!
