Our Home Exterior Makeover

September 12, 2021Shannon Aycock

Earlier this spring, we decided it was time to have the exterior of our home painted. We have Hardie board siding (not vinyl siding) which has to be painted periodically. It has been almost 11 years since it was lasted painted, so it was definitely due! Knowing that this task was coming, I had been scheming for a year or more and gathering ideas for the various other exterior improvements I wanted to tackle at the same time. We ended up painting not just the siding, but also the brick foundation, which you all had very strong opinions on when I put up an Instagram poll! I knew painting the brick was one of those things that you can’t reverse, but I have always always loved painted brick homes, so I went with my gut and painted it…and it was the best decision ever! We also switched out the builder-basic vinyl shutters with custom ones made from cypress wood. We also switched out the round colonial style columns for custom wood columns, using cypress wood like the shutters so they’ll last a lifetime. We are ecstatic with the end result!

I have to say, picking out the perfect paint colors for the exterior of a home is HARD!! We got several samples of white and analyzed them for days before deciding. Here are the colors that won out!

  • Exterior paint color (siding and brick) – Alabaster by Sherwin Williams (our trim is a standard white vinyl which we did not paint)
  • Shutters and door – Uncertain Grey by Sherwin Williams
  • Column Stain – This was a custom mix…it took a few tries to get the color just right, so a few were mixed to get to this final color…sorry!!

Now scroll ahead for the good stuff…the before and after photos:

And here’s a few more of the finished product…

Another minor change that made a big impact was these three corbels. They were a last minute add that I decided to do once the columns were in place. I felt like we needed a couple more wood accents on this end of the house to compliment the columns, and I love how they turned out.

We have had the copper lanterns a few years, but they pop so much more against the white! I switched out the black planters for these wood square planters. They came unfinished and I painted them white. The topiaries are faux and they were a great Amazon find. They’ve been on the front porch since December and are holding up really well. It’s quite the transformation, right!? If you have an exterior project in your future, I hope you found this post helpful! Thanks for stopping by!

Do you know what line of paint your painters used from Sherwin-Williams? Duration or maybe Emerald? And did they do that same line for your brick?

One last question… sorry! 🙂 We are painting our house white as well and we are going from a darker gray color. Did it take two coats to cover your previous color on both the siding and brick?

Hi! Don’t apologize…happy to help! I am not sure of the line…I just know it was Sherwin Williams latex paint in satin finish. And yes, they used the same paint for both the siding and foundation. They primed both the siding and the brick, and then did two coats of paint. Hope that helps!
