Let’s Talk Curls

September 17, 2018

One thing you may not know about me is that I have naturally curly hair (the above picture is my natural curl!).  I personally prefer my hair blown out straight or curled with a curling iron/wand, so I do not wear it natural that often.  One of the reasons I don’t wear my hair natural much is because when I do, I have to wash it every day.  When I wake up in the mornings, my hair is literally a rat’s nest and must be washed ASAP, and then it takes forever to air dry.  The curls are CRAZY and definitely have a mind of their own!  When I wear my hair straight, I typically only wash it about twice a week, so that’s much easier.  I definitely wish I could sleep on my curls and that they would still look decent the next morning, but it just does not work for me!

I posted some stories on Instagram recently where my hair was curly, and I received a lot of questions/comments about whether or not it was my natural curl and how I managed it. I thought I would take a few minutes to share with you my routine and the products I am currently using to help keep these crazy curls under control!

  • When I wash my hair, I do not use shampoo/conditioner that is specifically for curly hair since I don’t wear my hair curly all the time.  My favorite shampoo and conditioner is the Pureology Hydrate line.  While I do rotate in different brands/lines from time to time, I always end up coming back to this.  I have fine, dry hair that is also frizzy, and on top of that it is color-treated.  This shampoo and conditioner helps keep my hair hydrated and healthy.
  • Once out of the shower, I now wrap my hair up in an old t-shirt to help soak up some of the water instead of using a towel.  A while back I posted on my Instagram story and asked for any new tips on how to care for curly hair.  Several people mentioned that you should never put a towel on your hair because it makes it more frizzy, and recommended I  use a cotton t-shirt to help soak up the water, so I have been trying that lately and I do think it helps.
  • I leave the t-shirt on my hair for about 3-5 minutes, then I take it off and immediately spray this Pureology Hair Beautifier product.  I love this – it primes, protects and perfects all in one.  You will see that overall it has over 20 benefits, but it is also the best detangler!
  • After spraying on the product mentioned above, I then run a wide-toothed comb through it to get the tangles out, then I will spray on the It’s a 10 Leave in Conditioner for Blondes and comb through it one more time.  Then I kind of just shake my hair around and let my curls loosen up and fall into place, then apply one final curl-specific product.
  • For the past few months, I have used this Pureology Curl Complete gel, but I recently received a sample of this DevaCurl Texture Whip and liked it so much that I just bought the full-size bottle.  Another product that I’ve used in the past and liked was the Redken Curvaceous gel.  I do not like for my curls to be crunchy or look hard and wet.  Any of these three products I’ve just mentioned are good options for helping your curls stay frizz-free, relaxed and natural.
  • After applying that final product, I just let my hair air dry from there.  This usually takes a long time, but I cannot put any heat on my hair when wearing it natural because it will definitely make it frizzy.

People often say things like “girls with curly hair want straight hair, and girls with straight hair want curly hair”, but I honestly don’t mind my curls.  I am glad I am able to (somewhat) manage them and that I have the option to wear it several different ways.  You just have to embrace what you are born with and learn how to work with it!

You can shop any of the products I have mentioned, as well as the outfit I am wearing in the above photo, by scrolling through the bar below!

If you have naturally curly hair and have any tips to share, I’d love to hear them! Have a great day!  XOXO!
